Calm before the storm in Prospect school issues

Calm prevailed at the April 2 Charter School Board Meeting in Prospect. Readers will remember that previous meetings have been less orderly.

During the meeting, Jennifer Durham gave board members and guests a tour of new technological additions to her classroom. Durham received a small grant to purchase software that allows her to connect her iPad to the desk computer (and her home computer) and that to the overhead projector to the white board at the front of the classroom. With the iPad, she can be at various places in the classroom, assisting students and not have to be at the front of the room. She hopes it will allow for more direct contact with students while allowing lessons to proceed as usual.

The Principal reported that there are just 10 weeks left in the school year and the school is now at the end of the third quarter. Preparations for the Prom are underway. The Prom will be held at Diamond Lake. Spring sports are also underway and the school has erected a fence to prevent any wayward discus or other equipment from inadvertently being tossed into the street which would cause problems with oncoming traffic, either motor vehicle or pedestrian. One student is learning the skills necessary to umpire softball and is said to be progressing well.

The question has arisen about expanded options classes: whereby a student may travel to either RCC or SOU to take classes and gain credits both for high school and college. At present, 10 students have expressed an interest in the program. Students may take advantage of the dual credits, but at some point, expenses could become an issue. The classes and books are paid by the school district, traveling expense by the individual students.

Superintendent Don Alexander has been exploring the boundary change and will report those findings to the regular school board meeting.

One board member read a statement to the effect that problems arising in the school and with the board should be handled internally. Her contention is that the negative publicity adversely affects the students. Another said that the case before the TSPC will be handled by that organization and should not be tried in the press.

The board adopted a budget and brought several policy changes that were amended at the meeting and will therefore be voted on at the next Charter School Board meeting.
